Inside a Fish's Head

I got this from the Care2 website, but turns out that it's out of the aquarium just the other side of the bay from me.

  1. I can't listen to this now, but that sure is one cool-looking fish. I wonder if the almost-humanity of its face is thrown into sharper relief by the bizareness of the transparent head.

  2. It's pretty unbelievable, isn't it? I didn't find the narration added that much to just seeing the image.

Yeah, sure, I accept evolution, but what exactly is the survival benefit in this one?

  3. Perhaps a transpatent head conveys evolutionary advantages we don't know about. Perhaps it's an intermediate stage on the way to such an advantage. Perhaps nature just has a sense of humor.

My v-word is platsoc, which I mention only because I think I've had it as a v-word before.

  4. Funny, I saw that platsoc as a kind of dyslexic 'plastic', which is what fishhead looks made from.

I also like your inadvertent neologism--'transpatent'. Though I'm not sure what one would be, I'm sure it's only a matter of time before one evolves.

  5. Transpatent is a shadowy international organization that has something to do with inventions and intellectual property. PLATSOC is the name of the governing body for soccer in this Nigerian state. Either that, or it's the group mounting a brave but ridiculous bid to bring the Olympics to Plattsburgh, New York.

  6. Here's the pitch.

    SEA THRU

A high tech thriller with unexpected depths.

When a team of scraggly marine biologists are approached by a ruthless venture capitalist, they develop Platsoc®, a genetically engineered transparent skin layer modified from the head of a lowly deep sea fish. While different companies in the medical industry vie for the World Courts' newly instituted 'transpatent' for global market domination, no one dreams that the beauty industry will be willing to pay the biggest bucks of all.

    Until it does.

  7. And here's the title:

The Girl With the See-Through Head.

  8. It's really too bad that old Stieg isn't still alive so that I could sell him the idea and plan my retirement.

  9. It's got everything he liked, doesn't it Big, bad corporations, and women. Some of the corporations would have to be American.
