Santa Cruz Bridge Mosaics

I don't actually if any local Santa Cruzans read this blog, or really, if anyone does, but this is a cool local project going on right now, and the video gives a good sense of the town for those who don't know it.

  1. It gives a good sense of the town even for those who know it -- or who have met it once, at any rate.

  2. Yes, and the mosaics on the Water Street bridge, which I used to walk daily look pretty cool. I'll have to go check them out some time.

  4. I like mosaic art a lot, though I wouldn't have the patience ever to do it.

  5. I visited Ravenna about fifteen years ago to see the great late antique/early Byzantine mosaics, and I was pleased to see that the city still hosted a mosaic school. I saw some photos of what looked like some pretty interesting modern mosaics. So the art there has been alive for almost 1,500 years.

  6. I haven't been, unfortunately. I think one of the beauties of mosaics is that learning the craft takes the kind of concentration that frees you from the anxiety of having to come up with something original.

  7. One of the reasons I was unhappy that Boston’s Cardinal Bernard Law was called to Rome to take custody of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore rather than getting thrown in prison was that that church has gorgeous, fluidly classical-looking fifth-century mosaics, precursors of the sixth-century examples in Ravenna, you might say.

  9. Yes, do tell her Janet--I haven't checked in on their fundraising project, but I know they have to have 5000 by March 1st to do the next bridge.

We should go take a look at it the next time you're in town.
