Down to the Sea in Ships: the Live Ships Map

I didn't know there was such a thing until I saw this on the Rachel Maddow Show the other night. But if you go to the Live Ships Map, you can see what's going on with ships all over the world right now. Right now! I'm not particularly a ship geek, but I do like these sort of live maps of the world.

  1. I wonder if Somali piracy has rekindled interest in ships.

  2. Yeah, I have no ideaw if this thing predates the pirates or not, but it occurs to me that it might be a good kind of tool to have if you were a Somali pirate.

  3. I wonder if Somali pirates like this site on Facebook.

  4. I suspect they'd rather keep their knowledge to themselves...

  5. Oh, I don't know. Some surprisingly bad people use social media, I've heard.

  6. Apparently, that includes almost everybody. I was just idly scrolling through a list on Slate and found this article about what people really use Facebook for.

Personally, I'm not on Facebook, and so can resist such temptations. But I do hear from friends, quite frequently, oh, I hardly ever use Facebook except to stalk my friends.

I guess stalking is now a good thing.

  7. I'm not on Facebook either, though I do Tweet. But I will read occasionally of some terrorist or other bad person using social media. I'm sure some comedian has explored the comic possibilities of some embassy destroyer who breaks down in tears when his fellow Tweeters or Facebook friends refuse to believe that he is, in fact, who he really ys.

  8. Funny you should mention that, because in that same list on Slate, there was another article about trolling Jihadi terrorist websites in the hope of disrupting them.

A few good comedians wouldn't go amiss.

  9. Yeah, our terrorist, his confidence shattered, could seek advice from a social-media guru on monetizing his message.

  10. Judging by what I've heard of similar attempts to to monetize, he would be lucky to afford a water pistol.

  11. Well, the idea is to get yourself out there, not just to blow stuff up but to let folks know you're blowing stuff up. Don't just be a terrorist, but talk about other terrorists.

  12. Right--invite them to do a guest post, stuff like that.

  13. Include links to other terrorist groups, practice SEO, and so on.
